Yoni Love 101: PROPER CARE AND USE Of Your Yoni Egg
Welcome to The Yoni Diaries! You probably landed here because you have a lot of questions about yoni eggs -- from "how to use a yoni egg (and why every woman should!)," to "how do I clean my yoni egg?" To "how to insert a yoni egg..." Using a yoni egg will change your life-- it is an intuitive dance, much like a budding relationship, and the most profound healing can come by trusting in this process.
I have put together this page of instructions for use and care, as well as YONI EGG Frequently Asked Questions, to help you stay informed. No question is absurd (in fact, I think I may have heard them all!) so if you do not see your question addressed on this page, please send me an email to email@example.com and ask! I am happy to help! Please read this page in its entirety before using your egg!
How To Use Your Yoni Egg
Preparing and attuning your egg:
Before you use your egg, you must prepare it both energetically and physically. All my crystals are cleansed and blessed before I ship them, but you may want to attune the egg to your specific energies once you receive it.
First, energetically cleanse your egg, by smudging with sage. A sage leaf has been included with your purchase for this purpose. Simply take a match to the sage leaf, igniting it. Gently blow the flame out and fan the smoke over your egg. (You are free to use what ever smudge method you wish, such as palo santo, sweetgrass, essential oil spray, and you can even try laying the egg in a dish of sea salt.)
Next, you will want to sterilize the egg.
I personally recommend wiping your egg with cotton gauze doused in vodka or brandy (do not use rubbing alcohol). I have discovered that the hot water bath, if not done properly, can damage your egg. However, if you wish to try the hot water bath, I have included instructions. Just remain patient and follow the directions! :)
Hot Water Bath Instructions:
1) Boil two cups of water
2) Let it cool
3) Place your egg in the water for about five minutes.

Attuning Your Egg
Now that your egg is ready for use, become attuned to your yoni egg by spending time with it.
Crystals are living beings and in order to get the most benefit from your egg, you will want to attune yourself to it.
While we are working to strengthen the physical body with yoni eggs, a lot of the work we do also involves using your intuition and chakras. In psycho-spiritual terms, chakras are the energy centers located throughout the body that correlate to different functions of a healthy life.
Yoni egg practice will deal mainly with the root and sacral chakras and during your attunement, we will work specifically with the sacral chakra. This is where we first open to sensuality and manifesting/ creating our reality. Your sacral chakra (aka svadhistana, "the sweet spot") is located along the spine, just below the belly button. It is also important to note this chakra is associated with the moon and is feminine (receptive/ yin) in nature. When your svadhistana chakra is healthy, you are able to get in touch with your sensuality, pleasure and creative abilities.
Start by lying on your back, place the yoni egg on your exposed belly, and gently roll it around with your hand. You do not have to be naked to do this, just expose your belly button area so you can feel the sensations of the crystal against your skin.
As you handle your egg here, begin to visualize the frequencies of your crystal egg connecting to the lotus like shape of your svadhistana chakra. See your chakra begin to blossom and open up. Breathe in fully. Exhale fully.
Now, see the frequencies retracting from this energy center and watch as the chakra slowly closes up again, as if the flower is resting at night. Breathe in fully. Exhale fully.
Spend as much time here as you wish, enjoying the sensations of opening and closing your svadhistana chakra with the rhythm of your breath and until you really get the sense that you, your egg and your chakra have really connected.
Sleep with your egg! You might choose to sleep with your egg, getting to know it for a bit before you become more intimate with. Simply place your egg in a baggie (the bag it came in is ideal for this) and place it under your pillow. Be sure to record any dreams or messages you may have received upon waking.
Meditate with your egg: ask what it wants. You will know intuitively how long it wants to stay in. Some sleep with it in. Trust YOUR intuition and follow your own body wisdom.
Now you are ready to insert your egg.
I recommend making this practice a sacred ritual…
Take a bath, light a candle, pamper yourself. It helps to prepare the yoni by massaging your breasts and nipples. The massage naturally lubricates the vaginal canal, preparing your body for the easy insertion of your egg. Relax. When you feel ready, insert the egg large side up. You may feel the egg being naturally “sucked” up the vaginal canal. This is normal! And rest assured, it is also normal if it does not…
You do not have to follow this routine every time you use your egg. At a certain point, you will become very comfortable with inserting the egg and it will be second nature. Again, trust your body wisdom and follow your own pace.
Lubricant: If you require lube, I highly recommend you avoid using synthetic products, including "water based" lubes. Instead, try organically grown fatty plant oils that are naturally soothing, healing and emollient rich such as coconut oil, cacao butter or jojoba oil. (Nadine Artemis of Living Libations is an awesome resource on all natural lubes!)
Once you have inserted your egg, try the following exercise...
Sit with your egg inside of you and breathe naturally.
Focus your mind's eye on your yoni as you breathe in and tighten your pelvic floor muscles. Exhale and slowly relax the pelvic floor.
Breathe in through your nose and your yoni, pulling your muscles up and in. Exhale and release.
Continue on 3 reps of 8, with a rest period in between each one time per day.
Depending on the metaphysical properties of your stone, you may notice different sensations, emotions, or energy shifts taking place. This is not a definitive list, but as an example:
Rose quartz = warmth and calm;
Amethyst = spiritual connection, peace of mind and calm, restful sleep;
Onyx = release of negativity, strengthening boundaries, protection;
Red jasper= healing from sexual shame, strong pelvic support, healing womb trauma;
Unakite = empowered sense of abundance, forging beneficial partnerships;
Tiger’s Eye Jasper = insight, creativity, confidence, powerful presence, personal power;
Sodalite= sobriety, clear vision, clear communication, heightened intuition.
Yoni Egg FAQS
What is a yoni? In Sanskrit, Yoni means "sacred space" and is a beautiful euphemism for the vagina. Yoni refers to the entire female reproductive system, including the vagina, womb, ovaries. The Yoni is also a sacred symbol of the Goddess, the abstract representation of Shakti energy, the creative force that moves through the entire Universe (or Yoniverse). A woman's yoni is her sacred source of vitality, and yet, in our Western culture, we are not taught to understand this. Instead, our culture is taught to regard the vagina with disdain. Women hold a lot of trauma in this area, regardless if they were victims of unwanted sexual advances. As Western women, we tend to store strong negative emotions such shame, guilt and anger here. Every woman deserves to reconnect to her sacred space and using a yoni egg can help.
What is a yoni egg? A yoni egg is a sacred tool of feminine self-care, allowing women to honor her sacred space. The yoni egg has been used by women for centuries in Eastern cultures, and is more commonly known as a "jade egg" because they were once traditionally made of jade. Today, yoni eggs can be made of any type of semi-precious stone. Yoni eggs are inserted into the vagina and are used to strengthen and tone the pelvic floor. There are certain metaphysical benefits to using semi-precious stone eggs for this practice, as explained elsewhere on this site.
How will the yoni egg affect my menstrual cycle? Regular yoni egg practice will strengthen and tone the yoni, essentially making menstruation less painful, more regular and more manageable. It is recommended that you do not use your egg while menstruating.
What if I am menopausal? Will using a yoni egg be of any benefit? Absolutely! In fact, proper use of your yoni egg keeps muscles from atrophying and the uterus and other organs from sinking. Daily exercise (just a few minutes a day!) increases blood flow to the pelvic floor, enhancing overall tone, strength and sensation in the yoni. Menopause presents unique challenges to women, including vaginal dryness, loss of muscle tone and sensation. If you are peri-menopausal, menopausal or post menopausal, using a yoni egg in addition to herbal infusions and regular exercise is recommended by energists, Taoist and health care professionals.
How will the yoni egg affect my orgasms? Again, regular yoni egg practice will strengthen and tone the yoni. With the correct use of your yoni egg, you can actually grow new nerve endings in the vagina, thereby increasing sexual pleasure. A healthy yoni means stronger, deeper orgasms.
Can I overdo it with the yoni egg practice? Yes, it is possible to overwork your yoni which can stress the muscles and have the opposite effect. Remember, while your vagina is a strong muscle, the nerves and all neural pathways around it are still delicate. The yoni is not in competition and there is no need for marathon training. Instead, pay close attention to how your yoni feels. Start out slowly with your yoni egg practice, working up to a regular routine practice. Follow your body's cues. The point is not so much "strength training" as it is to tone and increase flexibility.
How can a yoni egg cleanse my womb? The thing about our emotions is this -- we store them in our bodies, and women tend to store a lot of negative emotions in the yoni area. When you have body work like massage done, or when you exercise, you release emotional charges that have built up in your tissues. Because a yoni egg exercises the yoni, your muscles will release emotional buildup and clear any psychic debris from this area each time you use your egg. Based on the energetic properties of your stone, you can get very specific with your healing intent. For instance, using a braccieated red jasper yoni egg can energetically cleanse your womb of sexual shame. You can then switch it up and use a rose quartz yoni egg to infuse some gentle loving energy in the womb. You might then have some fun using a unakite yoni egg to amplify your manifesting powers.
What kind of yoni egg should I start with? Most beginners start with a medium (2 -3"") or large (3+") yoni egg and graduate to smaller yoni eggs (.5" - 1.5") as they become more adept at working the yoni muscles. As for the type of stone, I recommend using your intuition and listening to your body wisdom. You may know right away that you want to work with a particular stone, and if that is the case, go for it! I received a message in a dream that I was to work with carnelian. You might notice certain aches or emotional discomforts that can be soothed with the use of a particular semi-precious stone. Or, you might have a desire to manifest something very specific...use this as your cue to work with a stone whose metaphysical properties suit your needs.
What if my yoni egg gets lost in my vagina? Or worse, what if it gets stuck?
Your egg will not get lost in your vagina. It can't. But if your egg gets stuck, don't panic. Some women do experience vaginismus (the involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles) during the use of their egg. The best thing you can do is to simply relax and know that all is well. Take this as a sign that your body is not done working with the egg, and use it as an opportunity for self-pampering and care.
My good friend MaLinda Gunderson (who happens to be a brilliantly talented sex coach, btw) recommends a warm bath to help relax your body. Laughter can help to relax your body, too, and expel the egg.
You might also try intuitive movement, dance and simple walking. You can also bear down and "birth" it out. Using your common sense, however, if the yoni egg has not moved down and out of your vagina after some time, do seek assistance.
What if my yoni egg falls out?
I'm not going to lie, this can and does happen. It is up to you when and where you choose to work with your egg, and you may wish to keep it in during your normal daily activities. This could be a great ice-breaker, if you are not too shy to talk about it.
Common Sense Measures:
Always sterilize your egg before each use, and clean after every use.
DO NOT PUT YOUR EGG IN BOILING WATER!
DO NOT MICROWAVE YOUR EGG!
Avoid use during menstruation.
If you are pregnant, postpartum or are experiencing any kind of sexual dysfunction, always check with your midwife, doula, wise woman mentor, doctor or other trusted adviser before using yoni eggs. The information listed here is not intended to diagnose or treat.
***A word about sexual trauma. While many women have experienced profound emotional healing with the use of their yoni eggs, I want to offer a word of caution. Using a yoni egg can sometimes generate intense emotional discomfort in the case of unaddressed sexual trauma. Therefore, use of a yoni egg is not for everyone. If you have experienced any kind of sexual trauma for which you have not begun the healing process, I recommend that you first seek professional help from a qualified mental health counselor before using a yoni egg.
